GOVERNING BOARD MEMBER QUALIFICATIONS/OATH OF
OFFICE
Under Ohio law, a governing board member must be an elector residing in
the district. To qualify as an elector, a person must be a citizen of the
United States, 18 years of age or older, a resident of the State for at
least 30 days prior to the election and a resident of the county and
precinct in which he/she offers to vote for at least 30 days prior to the
election.
A variety of other public positions, elected and appointed, have been
determined by the General Assembly or the courts to be incompatible with
school board membership. Generally, offices are considered incompatible
when one is subordinate to, or in any way provides a check upon, the other
or when it is physically impossible for one person to discharge the duties
of both positions. The person may not be a prosecuting attorney, city
solicitor or other official acting in a similar capacity (R.C. 3313.13),
not a member of a local district in this county, and not have, directly or
indirectly, any pecuniary interest in any contract of the Governing Board
or be employed in any manner for compensation by the Governing Board.
Oath - Each member of the Governing Board shall before entering upon the
duties of the office, take an oath to support the constitution of the
United States and the constitution of the State of Ohio and to perform
faithfully the duties of his/her office.
