PART-TIME AND SUBSTITUTE CERTIFICATED STAFF EMPLOYMENT

The Governing Board recognizes its responsibility to procure the services of substitute teachers in order to prevent the abatement of the operation of the schools as a result of the absence of regular personnel.

The Governing Board shall approve annually the names of potential substitute personnel and the positions in which they may substitute except that additional names may be duly added to the list of substitute teachers by the Governing Board during the school year, and may employ substitute teachers for terms not to exceed one year for assignment as services are required to replace temporarily absent regular teachers and fill new positions. Such assignment of substitute teachers may be terminated when their services are no longer required.

Professional substitutes must possess a valid Ohio teaching certificate on file.

A teacher employed as a substitute with an assignment to one specific teaching position shall, for the first 60 days of service therein, receive no sick leave or other benefits and be paid on the substitute's scale, except as otherwise recommended by the Superintendent. Following the first 60 days of service, the teacher shall be entitled to the benefits provided by law.

The Superintendent may select from an approved list, substitutes to work temporarily on a day-by-day basis in the place of an absent teacher who has an entitlement to a regular position approved by the Governing Board

A substitute employed on a day-to-day basis shall be entitled only to the wages approved by the Governing Board on a per diem basis and to no other benefits.

The employment of substitute teachers prior to approval by the Governing Board is authorized when their employment is required to maintain continuity in the educational program. Approval shall be recommended to the Governing Board at the next regular meeting.

The substitute shall follow the daily plan provided by the regular teacher, and when such plan is exhausted shall so report to the principal or Department Head who shall assist the substitute to prepare further plans.

Substitute Compensation

In order to retain well-qualified substitutes for service in this Service Center, the Governing Board will offer competitive compensation.

Substitutes employed on a day-to-day basis shall be paid a per diem basis at a rate set annually (or periodically) by the Governing Board.

A substitute employed for more than 60 days in one specific continuous position will be placed at the beginning position on the salary schedule and will be eligible for fringe benefits as specified by law.

If a substitute is initially assigned to complete a leave of absence or unfilled teaching position of a prolonged duration, the Superintendent may start the employee at the beginning step of the salary schedule. The substitute will be eligible for fringe benefits as specified by law.

Daily substitutes shall not earn sick leave nor be paid for days when students are not required to attend school.
