PART-TIME AND SUBSTITUTE CERTIFICATED STAFF
EMPLOYMENT
The Governing Board recognizes its responsibility to procure the services of
substitute teachers in order to prevent the abatement of the operation of
the schools as a result of the absence of regular personnel.
The Governing Board shall approve annually the names of potential substitute
personnel and the positions in which they may substitute except that
additional names may be duly added to the list of substitute teachers by the
Governing Board during the school year, and may employ substitute teachers
for terms not to exceed one year for assignment as services are required to
replace temporarily absent regular teachers and fill new positions. Such
assignment of substitute teachers may be terminated when their services are
no longer required.
Professional substitutes must possess a valid Ohio teaching certificate on
file.
A teacher employed as a substitute with an assignment to one specific
teaching position shall, for the first 60 days of service therein, receive
no sick leave or other benefits and be paid on the substitute's scale,
except as otherwise recommended by the Superintendent. Following the first
60 days of service, the teacher shall be entitled to the benefits provided
by law.
The Superintendent may select from an approved list, substitutes to work
temporarily on a day-by-day basis in the place of an absent teacher who has
an entitlement to a regular position approved by the Governing Board
A substitute employed on a day-to-day basis shall be entitled only to the
wages approved by the Governing Board on a per diem basis and to no other
benefits.
The employment of substitute teachers prior to approval by the Governing
Board is authorized when their employment is required to maintain continuity
in the educational program. Approval shall be recommended to the Governing
Board at the next regular meeting.
The substitute shall follow the daily plan provided by the regular teacher,
and when such plan is exhausted shall so report to the principal or
Department Head who shall assist the substitute to prepare further plans.
Substitute Compensation
In order to retain well-qualified substitutes for service in this Service
Center, the Governing Board will offer competitive compensation.
Substitutes employed on a day-to-day basis shall be paid a per diem basis at
a rate set annually (or periodically) by the Governing Board.
A substitute employed for more than 60 days in one specific continuous
position will be placed at the beginning position on the salary schedule and
will be eligible for fringe benefits as specified by law.
If a substitute is initially assigned to complete a leave of absence or
unfilled teaching position of a prolonged duration, the Superintendent may
start the employee at the beginning step of the salary schedule. The
substitute will be eligible for fringe benefits as specified by law.
Daily substitutes shall not earn sick leave nor be paid for days when
students are not required to attend school.
